"Senior" Tang Soo Do

Seniors will soon have their very own class at The Peaceful Warrior School! Beginning in late October- early November 2011 we will be offering a "Senior Class" (those ages 50 & up) who are looking to get a bit more active. This is not a typical karate class, it has actually been developed by Master Mateo through years of research, training and modification to best suit the needs of the "senior set".

Classes will consist of light warm ups and stretching, basic breathing exercises and a "form" (a series of movements) to keep the body healthy and active. This class is designed to promote better health and mobility for the student. All fitness levels are invited to participate.

Classes will be 45 minutes, twice per week. Class days and times will be posted soon! VERY AFFORDABLE !

Class Schedule Changes

The Peaceful Warrior School will be enacting schedule changes effective Monday (8-01-11). Please be sure to check your e-mails. If you are on our student e-mail list you received a copy of the new schedule recently. For those not on the list, a copy will be available at the main website by Friday this evening. The student site will be updated with a copy of the class times as well.

Please take the time to read through the schedule completely as not only have class times changed, but also the ages within the classes as well.

For those who are not receiving e-mails via mailchimp from us......WHY? Everyone at this point should have signed up for the e-mails. Plainly put, e-mails are the quickest & most efficient way for us to reach everyone in the shortest amount of time. If you do not have personal access to the internet, the bulletin board in the studio is the next best bet. Everything is posted there each month as well.

Teen Adventure Camp Kicks Off

The Peaceful Warrior School launched it's 1st ever TEEN ONLY camp today (ages 10-16). Running from 9am-2pm, our week began with martial arts classes and then a trip to the theater to see "The Green Lantern". Simply awesome. Tomorrow we are on to rock wall climbing! The Peaceful Warrior School has won the Annual Indian Trail 4th of July Parade "Best Youth Float 2011"! A huge congratulations to all our studio parents and students who helped in every way, shape and form that day! Our parents and students pitched in on every aspect of the parade float & we thank you. This studio family is the greatest and we appreciate each and everyone who marched (and sometimes ran), rode the float, handed out cards, threw loads of candy, broke wood, helped build the float, cooked the bbq, brought the desserts, sides, drinks and snacks! YOU ROCK! TANG SOO!

4th of July Parade Information

Hi Parents!

Below is some important info concerning our yearly 4th Of July Parade & Celebration!

The Town of Indian Trail Parade begins at 11:30am on Monday (July 4th)
All Peaceful Warrior School parade participants must meet us up at the float by 11am sharp
All participants must wear their FULL uniform, sneakers (no flip flops) & be sure to have sun screen on!
The parade ends at Food Lion at Monroe Rd. & Indian Trail Rd. We will be bringing the participants back up to the studio, there is no need to meet your child down at the Food Lion- the traffic will be crazy.
Following the parade, we will be hosting our annual BBQ at the studio for students. Family, and friends of our students are invited. We just ask that you sign up inside the studio if you are attending & please make a note of how many will be in your party (we are arranging for BBQ & need an accurate head count)

Indian Trail Train Tracks Closed

Parents, please note that CSX is working on the tracks in Indian Trail right down the street from the studio. Indian Trail Road will be closed off in both directions, you must enter from the Matthews-Indian Trail Rd. direction (runs between Ace hardware & Book Construction). Please make adjustments to your travel plans to class over the next few days. Word has it, they may not be finished until next week sometime.

The Peaceful Warrior School is very proud to announce that we are teaming up with Sams Club and Carolina Lanes of Matthews in an effort to raise money for The Children's Miracle Network.

We have sponsored a "lane" and would like to invite all of our family, neighbors, students and friends out to participate in this fun day. The goal of the event is to raise $10,000!

For just $10 per participant you will get 2 hours of bowling and shoe rental!

The event runs from 2pm-4pm on June 5th (Sunday) at Carolina Lanes in Matthews.

The Childrens Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for childrens hospitals.

Introducing a new program at The Peaceful Warrior School of Martial Arts: STIX 4 KIDS.
Stix 4 Kids is a dynamic Phillippino Stick course created by Master Julius Melegrito, designed for even the youngest of our students (ages 5 & up).
The course is 12 weeks in length and will be offered beginning on May 7th.

On March 28th (Monday) every student in every class (Little Dragons, B1, B2, Teens & Adults) is invited to bring as many friends as they would like to their class that night. Each student is asked to pick up a "buddy card" provided at the studio & have the "guest/parent" fill in the back of the card completely. That's it! Here's your chance to show your friends the skills you've been working so hard on - it's your night to shine!

As an added bonus: Any student who brings a "buddy" will receive a free pass to the NERF WAR on April 9th!! This is an event not to be missed, we will be raffling off a brand new NERF GUN! If your buddy signs up for Karate lessons after "Buddy Day"- he/she can come to the Nerf War FREE too!

Warrior Summer Camp 2011

Summer Camp may seem a million light years away, but actually it'a quite close! Did you know that school lets out on June 10th? Before you know it the kids will be in shorts!
The Peaceful Warrior has 10 weeks of summer camp for you to choose from - all themed - all filled with MAJOR fun. Our summer camps are for ages 5-10 years old and will keep your child busy from drop off to pick up.
We are proud to announce that we will have a new camp offered this year geared specifically to TEENS - "TEEN ADVENTURE CAMP"! Offered to ages 10-15 years only, this is a unique opportunity for your Teen to get into the summer camp fun too. We will be canoeing, rock wall climbing & white water rafting just to name a few this summer.... your Teen will come home T-I-R-E-D!
As for our younger campers, this year is filled with everything from pottery and swimming at Cane Creek to Discovery Place, fishing, Nascar Hall of Fame visit and so much more!

Shining Student

I recently had a conversation with a parent about a students performance at our last testing 2 weeks ago. He informed me on the evening of promotions of what had transpired during his sons testing, something I was unaware of. His son had been sick all day, but came to testing anyway. During testing he asked to be excused to use the restroom, while in there he was ill & his mother told him they could leave & test next month. This student instead replied that "A warrior never quits". He continued on with the testing & passed with flying colors. It's nice to see that those are not just words in the window. This child took the lessons we teach every day and persevered through a very tough "test". TANG SOO to our shining student!

Forms on the Web

In recent weeks many parents and students alike have been inquiring about accessing the "forms" on the web. There are many, many different interpretations of the forms we use here in the studio out there. My suggestion to you, would be not to use these forms you find as a "study tool". This is not to say that these other studios are doing them incorrectly, on the contrary. Every art, every style may have different approaches and unique interpretations of these forms. It is simply to avoid confusion that we recommend you not use them as a "studying guide".
We are in the process of putting the form tiogether on video for our students. We will keep you updated when these become available.

Some of our students performed in a special demonstration at Griffin Automotive in Monroe, NC this month. We took part in the Keeping Kids Safe Program hosted by Griffin Auto. The Peaceful Warrior kids broke boards, demonstrated forms and basic skills while Mrs. Mateo provided some face painting! Fun was had by all!

WOW! If you haven't heard yet, the school supply contest has officially come to an end as of Monday (Aug. 23rd). But no sad faces here folks! Our delivery to Indian Trail Elementary couldn't have been more wonderful. The teachers and staff even pitched in to help carry all of the goodies in and were so appreciative, it really made us so proud of all of our students & families.

SCHOOL SUPPLY CONTEST NEWS

Please note: To participate in the school supply contest you must bring in NEW items only. We cannot accept old/used products. Last night (Wed.) someone brought in used folders (written on), notebooks & a bag of used pencils etc. Paper was torn out of the notebooks as well.
Please understand we cannot accept these. Our commitment is to provide the school with new products. We are supplying children who are less fortunate than ourselves and doing a public service at the same time. We need to help start these children off on the right foot. I will leave these products on the display case for whoever they belong to, to claim.
Thank you everyone for your support thus far on this "community service project" for our school.

Our last visit with real heroes this week was to the Stallings Volunteer Fire Department. Here we met Firemen Ryan, Daniel & Chad. Each one of these brave men spent 2 hours touring the fire house with the kids, answering every crazy question in the book & making the kids laugh! They were extremley knowledgable and funny too. Many thanks to all our Heroes at the Stallings Fire House for letting us visit!

Today Deputy Sheriff Jeremy Schoen visited The Peaceful Warrior School! We had a spectacular time! Off. Schoen spoke to the campers about gun safety, bus safety and stranger dangers as well. We learned so much and are very thankful that he spent so much time with us. Off. Schoen answered everyone's questions and even let the kids pass around the handcuffs and his really cool expandable baton! At the end of the day everyone went home with really cool Jr. Deputy stickers - SWEET!

Today The U.S. Marine Corps paid a visit to The Peaceful Warrior School. We were very pleased to have SSgt. Matthew Wayne Sartin stop in and tell our students everything about the Marine Corps starting with boot camp to serving over seas.
SSgt. Sartin is currently a recruiter in Monroe, NC but held other positions while he served in Iraq & Okinawa, Japan as well. We are so proud to have him visit us and share all these great stories of his, from swimming with sharks in Japan to building schools in Thailand! He's an awesome guy and a superb Marine. We were very blessed to have Petty Officer Tamara Jacobs visit us today at The Peaceful Warrior School of Martial Arts. Off. Jacobs spoke to the children about what it is like to be in the Navy and all the different jobs that keep the Navy going. Petty Off. Jacobs showed us her badges of merit & explained what each meant. The kids were extremely excited to receive a special poster for each of them to take home.

It's that time of year again parents ,yes, school is almost back in session. If you are looking for a great place for your child to spend their afternoons, why not here at karate?
Our students save BIG TIME, when they "after school" with us. If you are currently paying for daycare, afterschool or babysitters somewhere else or you are just looking for someone to watch your child while your at work - this is your answer.
We offer pick-up from all local schools FREE - at no extra charge. There are 3 days per week we train in karate - every day homework is done & we even take care of snacks!

How awesome is that???? Launching our rockets was the finale to Space Week at Summer Camp! Everyone had a great time. Here Ellie sets hers off as Cal & Greg look on. Todays grand finale would not have been possible with out the help of Mr. Bill Lawson. He provided the launch pad, engines & most importantly the expertise. We would like to announce that once again our school has pulled off an amazing accomplishment, for 4 years straight, we have managed to walk away from the Indian Trail 4th of July Parade with a win!
But in all honesty, TRULY, what the community & the "town" itself doesn't know, is that the true prize is YOU ALL.
It is every last parent, student & family member who came and helped with the decorations, ideas, construction, etc. You are the ones who we are really PROUD to have as part of our "family" & to call our own!

The last few days have been so busy - preparations for this months testing have been very valuable, as tonight was a HUGE success! We couldn't be more proud of all who tested today, many for senior ranking. Congratulations and we will post pictures very soon, so be sure to check back!

Summer Camp goes to the Carolina Raptor Center

Check-out this AWESOME owl at left. Today the "Summer Campers" went to The Carolina Raptor Center where we saw dozens upon dozens of different raptors who have been saved or donated to the center for rehabilitation. Most will spend the rest of their lives there being taken care of by the wonderful people.
Next up we visited Latta Plantation Park. Here we got to eat lunch lakeside and go hunting for clam shells afterwards. We had so much fun, we got back to the studio with only a 1/2 hour to spare before being picked up for the day! If you are interested in camp, there is still time & there is still room - don't miss out. Get in today!

June Testing This Weekend

This Friday (6/25) is the Adult & Teen Testing at 7pm. Please be sure to have your registration form turned in by Friday. Saturday (6/26) morning at 9:30am is the Childrens Testing. Please have your forms turned in by Friday as well.
Please remember to arrive for your testing atleast 10 minutes prior to allow some time to get situated & to stretch, as there is no organized group stretching beforehand.

"Summer T-Shirt Daze"

Beginning June 14th (Monday) students will once more be permitted to wear thier Peaceful Warrior T-shirts to class. The shirts must be Peaceful Warrior t-shirts only, in order to be permitted. Also, all students must wear their uniform pants & belt in order to be permitted to take class. No variations of this will be permitted.
There will be a new order sheet placed in the studio for all those wishing to buy a new Peaceful Warrior T-shirt.

Jim November Update

Mr. & Mrs. Mateo went up to see Mr. November this morning. He is doing better, he was moved from Cardiac Recovery to CCU (Cardiac Care Unit) on Friday. He is not really receiving visitors, but we did visit with Ruth and Shannon went back this evening and saw the kids (Erin & Jaime). Everyone is doing well. Jim is no longer ventilated, which is great! Keep up the prayers and we'll keep you updated.
